Buy Satsuma Meiji Box. 19Th Century

- Very good quality earthenware box, made in Japan, probably in the second half of the 19th century, so it would belong to the Meiji Era (1868-1912), although it could very well be from the first half of the 19th century, which would correspond to the last period of the Edo Era (1603-1868).
- The box is thick, soundless to the touch, and is made of light greyish-beige earthenware, giving a greyish-yellowish appearance with a colourless glaze. The quality of the earthenware is close to that of stoneware.
- All the glaze on the inside of the box is crackled in very small grey fractions.
- On the outside, the lid has "golden" backgrounds with several characteristic Japanese figures. The brilliant treatment of the faces stands out. One woman expressing tolerance and seven men expressing aggression. All figures are intertwined by a Dragon with scales in White Enamel relief.
- On the inside, the lid has been left in the colour of the earthenware. On this inner side, two characteristic Japanese figures of men expressing resignation have been drawn.
- On the outside, the Bowl has "Golden" backgrounds with several characteristic Japanese figures. The brilliant treatment of the faces stands out. Ten men expressing aggression. All the figures are intertwined by a dragon with scales in white enamel relief.
- The underside of the base has been left in the colour of the earthenware, and the Seal of the Mark has been stamped on it. This Seal includes a golden "Circle with a Cross" on a brown base, the Sign of the Monk Shimazu. The other Signs on the Seal also probably identify the place of manufacture and the name of the maker.
- On the inside, the bowl has been left in the colour of the earthenware. On this inner face, three characteristic Japanese figures of men expressing resignation have been drawn.
- After careful analysis of the box, we have come to the conclusion that no decals have been used in the decoration, the entire box being hand-drawn.
- All these features give the box a very interesting patina, with a very attractive and quality appearance.
