- Gustave Doré (1832-1883) was a French artist, painter, sculptor and illustrator. In France he is considered the last of the great illustrators and internationally one of the most famous illustrators of the 19th century.
- The engraving, executed in black and white, shows a view of the bay of Alicante, with a large number of ships. It depicts the attack by a French fleet on the Spanish Mediterranean coast. In the background is a view of walled Alicante and the castle.
- The signature of Gustave Doré appears on the lower left and on the right: Delduc.
- It belongs to a periodical, as letters can be seen on the back.
- The engraving is glued to cardboard. It is small in size, unframed.
