- Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) was an English landscape and portrait painter. He trained primarily in landscape painting, but these did not sell well, so he concentrated on portraiture. He possessed a poetic sensibility in his paintings. The resemblance of his landscapes is evident in the way he blended the figures in his portraits with the scenes behind them. His later work was characterized by a light palette and economical, effortless brushstrokes.
- This is an oil painting on canvas from around 1750. It remained in the family of those portrayed and was little known, after which it was regularly requested for other exhibitions in Great Britain and abroad, being praised by critics for its charm and freshness. Later, the painting began to receive hostile scrutiny as a paradigm of paternalistic and capitalist society.
