ENGRAVING. BOMBARDMENT OF ALICANTE. SKETCH JOAQUÍN AGRASOT. 1873

Description:
- Woodcut, wood engraving. Probably belonging to a magazine or newspaper. Sketch by Joaquín Agrasot.
- The engraving shows the bombardment of Alicante by the cantonal squadron of Cartagena in 1873. The frigates ‘Numancia, Méndez Núñez and the steamer, Fernando El Católico’, which appear in the engraving, took part in it.
- The lower part is a rectangular engraving showing the Castle of Santa Bárbara on the far left, followed by the batteries on the quay and counter quay, the foreign squadron and the three frigates mentioned above.
- The upper part, divided into two parts, shows the battery on the counter-dock, with soldiers preparing it, and on the right-hand side the battery at the Puerta Nueva, also with soldiers preparing for battle.
- In the lower margins there are various signatures, probably of the draughtsmen and engravers.
- This is a wood engraving, a woodcut. It is undoubtedly the oldest engraving technique, dating back to the 14th century in Europe. The artist uses a tool to remove pieces of wood and make a negative drawing.
- It is large, rectangular and unframed. The engraving is glued to cardboard, and also glued in half.
- It is very important that the engraving has a Distinctive, Mark or Contrast, in order to be able to identify data such as the engraver, the artist, the place where it was printed and other details.

Conservation and Damage:
- General condition Good.
- The engraving has a fine thickness and good quality paper.
- As can be seen in the photographs, it has a slightly tanned colour, most probably due to the type of composition of the paper.
- There are two small tears on the sides, and they have been glued later.
- It shows wear and tear typical of it’s age.
