- The author, Jaime Balmes y Urpía (1810 - 1848) was a Spanish philosopher, theologian, apologist, sociologist and political treatise writer. Familiar with the doctrine of St. Thomas Aquinas, he did not belong to any particular school or current, and was described by Pius XII as the Prince of Modern Apologetics.
- The book contains no engravings. It deals with topics on thinking well, questions of existence, of possibility, logic in accordance with charity, etc.
