Description:
Engraving in etching steel (may be another technique). Recorder: Bittleston. The Virgin is represented with the child, through an allegory of wisdom. The Virgin keeps an open book in her left hand. The image transmits to the spectator, in a resounding way, a moment of recollection and tenderness. It has in the upper angles, with Gothic writing, the following legend: "And the child strong in spirit grew and filled whith waxed wisdom" - And the child, strong of Spirit, grew and perfected himself by enriching his wisdom.
Since the legend is in English, we think that the engraver could be British. The engraving is of magnificent invoice, with very high quality of execution, and made by a balanced composition. It uses a wide range of grays, extreme this one that makes the recording process extremely difficult, which gives it a very attractive appearance. Margins are scarce. The type of paper could not be checked. It has some dirt and faint rust marks spread throughout the engraving.
The engraving has not been removed from the frame. It would be interesting to proceed with a cleaning of the engraving, which would improve significantly. In the photos you can see some reflections in the glass, which do not respond to defects. It is quite rare to find. Although the frame that conserves is only about 40 years old, it is made with a lot of style and is of a very acceptable quality, which enhances the engraving, and ennobles its image.
Comments: Due to the fact that the differences in tonalities between photos and reality are inevitable, we must bear in mind that the color tones of the photos are not exactly the same as the tones of the actual colors. The Engraving presents the wear and tear of his time, as well as some stains. It has small flaws. The information provided here are personal opinions not contrasted.
