Description:
Damascene brass bowl, inlaid with copper and silver thread, forming geometric designs, from the first half of the 20th century.
- Surrounding the bowl are a series of legends in oriental alphabet, inserted in elementary geometric figures.
- The bowl is made from a single piece of brass, with the details bordering the exterior and the base.
- Beautiful chiselled work is visible all over the bowl, between the copper and silver inlay.
- It is beautifully cared for and has a lovely patina.
- This type of work corresponds to those carried out at the beginning of the 20th century in Damascus (Syria), which is where the name "Damascene" comes from, recovering the old Turkish styles and following the ancestral methods of metal treatment. Similar styles were also developed in Persia and Arabia.
- Damascene is defined as a craft that consists of making figures and designs by inlaying gold and silver thread and foil into steel, copper or iron, usually with bluing.
- No distinctive mark or contrast has been found that could provide information on the place where it was made, the maker"s details, or any other information.
Conservation and damage:
- The bowl has a good quality of workmanship. In some small areas the silver threads have come loose.
- The bowl is in a good state of preservation, with minor knocks and scratches.
- The Bowl shows wear typical of it"s age.
