Description:
- Ivory diptych engraving. Clovis is baptised by St. Remigius, etc. Collection of Mº Rigolo.
- The engraving shows a part of the ivory diptych of Clovis I being baptised by Saint Remigius.
- Saint Remigius, a saint of the Catholic Church, considered the precursor of Christianity in France. Clovis I, the first Frankish king to unify all of France, established Paris as the capital of his new kingdom.
- All titles and signatures are outside the plate.
- In the upper margin is the legend 'France Merovingiens - France Merovingiens'.
- In the lower margin is the legend 'Clovis baptise St Remi. Diptyque divoure, Collection de Mr. Rigolo' - 'Clovis baptised by St. Remigius, etc. Ivory diptych, Collection of Mr Rigolo'.
- In the upper right-hand corner is printed the number '144', which suggests that the engraving is number 144 of a series.
- In the lower right corner, the engraver signs as Lemaitre (Augustin François Lemaître).
- In the lower left-hand corner, the draughtsman signs as Muret, del.
- Augustin François Lemaître (1797-1870). French engraver, lithographer, designer, publisher and photographer. He depicted many landscapes, monuments, architecture and people, especially during his many travels in Europe.
- Intaglio etching on steel plate, although a different technique could also have been used.
- Produced in a single-colour black tone, very well inked.
- It is probably an engraving belonging to a book.
Conservation and Damage:
- General condition: Good.
- It is very well inked, and has a good stamping.
- The lateral, upper and lower margins are wide.
- The engraving is on thin, regular quality paper, glued at the corners to another paper.
- The engraving has small rust spots.
- If it were lightly washed and bleached, the result would be very good.
