- The artist, Paul Du Bois (1859-1938), was a prominent Belgian sculptor and medalist belonging to the Art Nouveau and Symbolist movements. Although he is celebrated for his large public monuments in Brussels and his sculptures in bronze, marble, and silver, Du Bois combined these major commissions with the design of high-end applied arts. During the Belle Époque, Art Nouveau sculptors often licensed their drawings and small reliefs to goldsmiths and foundries for the production of luxury everyday objects.
