Description:
- The author, Pedro Antonio de Alarcón y Ariza, a Spanish writer who belonged to the realist movement in which he stood out as one of the architects of the end of romantic prose. Many researchers consider that many of his books are inspired by romanticism and that Alarcón fought all his life against totalising realism.
- The book is profusely illustrated with engravings and drawings of plans, all interspersed in the text.
- With views of battles, of cities and landscapes, types, costumes and monuments, with the portrait of the author and the main characters, copied from photographs and sketches executed in the theatre of war itself.
Parts of the Contents:
- Single volume. Spanish copy, with the complete text.
- Waterproof paper covered dust jacket. Legal page. Title page. Engraving by the author. Foreword. Contents of 40 sections. Epilogue. Table of contents. Water-marked endpapers.
- Numerous engravings interspersed in the text. Map at the end of the book.
Book Description:
- Sewn binding of regular execution, with guillotined cuts, from the Second Half of the 19th Century.
- Text and engravings in single-colour printing in black, very good ink, well centred and with good margins.
- Book printed on tan paper, of medium thickness and regular quality.
- Hard covers in black and brown half leather.
- Black leather spine, with five ribs and gilt title stamping.
- Front and back covers smooth, without stamping. No dust jacket.
- Stamped on front cover: Plants of Buildings. Percy L. Marks. Gustavo Gili.
- The spine is stamped in gilt 'Alarcón. War in Africa'.
- Flyleaves with blue laid paper. Both flyleaves are intact.

Conservation and Damage:
- General Condition: Good.
- Sewn binding in fair condition.
- Cuts well preserved but dirty and with minimal rubbing.
- The leaves are in good condition, but some of them have stains. There are parts with pencil annotations, signs or underlining. The pages are slightly darkened at the edges due to age.
- In many of the engravings, it can be seen that some of the ink has been transferred to the adjacent page, leaving the corresponding mark. This is due to the fact that when the book was bound, the ink of the engravings was still fresh, or also to the quality of both the ink and the paper, which has allowed the engraving drawing to transfer when in contact for long enough.
- The tips are slightly deteriorated with light creases and folds.
- The pages of the book, both at the edges and in the middle, are damaged and rubbed, with light folds and creases, soiling, stains, rust marks and dampness.
- It retains the original map, which would have been located at the back of the book.
- The book shows wear and tear typical of it
