Description:
- Intaglio engraving of a map of Alicante. An 18th century nautical chart.
- A beautiful and curious engraving, made in black and white, with numbers, annotations and names written in French. In the central part it has the fleur-de-lis.
- The engraving belongs to the French work: ‘Compendium of the main maps, ports and roads of the Eastern Mediterranean’ dated 1764. It was made by the cartographer Joseph Roux.
- The map number 6 appears in the upper right-hand margin. The identifications of the different authors do not appear.
- This is an intaglio, a process of printing with strong water on copper.
- It is small and unframed.
Conservation and Damage:
- Good general condition.
- The engraving is on thick, good quality paper.
- The paper is quite clean, with hardly any rust or damp stains. The top and bottom edges have traces of having been glued with sticky tape.
- The engraving has the wear and tear of it's age.
Comments:
- Measurements are approximate.
- The tones of the colours in the photos are not the same as the tones of the real colours.
- The engraving on sale is the one that corresponds to the photos. The description is not a detailed exposition of the same.
