Description:
- Engraving of French arms and ships of the 12th century.
- All the titles and signatures are outside the plate.
- In the upper margin it has the legend ‘France XII.S - Francia S.XII’.
- In the lower margin it has the legend ‘Armes, Navires (M. S. de la B. R. ale)’.
- The number ‘270’ is printed in the upper right-hand corner, suggesting that the engraving is number 270 of a series.
- Augustin François Lemaître: French engraver, lithographer, designer, publisher and photographer. He depicted many landscapes, monuments, architecture and people, especially during his many travels in Europe.
- Intaglio etching on steel plate, although a different technique could also have been used.
- Produced in a single-colour black tone, very well inked.
- It is probably an engraving belonging to a book.
Conservation and Damage:
- General condition: Good.
- It is very well inked, and has a good stamping.
- The engraving has a thin paper of regular quality, glued by the corners to another paper.
- The engraving has small rust spots on the edges and in the lower area.
- If a light washing and bleaching were applied to it, the result would be very good.
