Description:
- Engraving Battlefield in Nefels. Switzerland.
- The battle of Näfels was the last battle of the conflicts between Switzerland and Austria that lasted for most of the 14th century. It was fought on 9 April 1388 between the Canton of Glarus and the former Swiss Confederation and the Archduchy of Austria.
- All titles and signatures are outside the plate. The draughtsman is unknown.
- In the upper margin is the legend 'Switzerland - Suisse'.
- In the lower margin is the legend 'Nefels (Champ de Bataille) - Nefels (Champ de Bataille)'.
- The number '24' is printed in the upper right-hand corner, suggesting that the engraving is number 24 in a series.
- In the lower right corner, the Engraver signs only as Rouargue, so it is by one of the two Rouargue brothers. In our opinion, the author of the engraving plate is most probably Adolphe Rouargue (1810 - 1870).
- Chalcographic etching on steel plate, although another technique could also have been used.
- It is in single-colour black tone, very well inked.
- It is probably an engraving belonging to a book.
Conservation and damage:
- General condition: Good.
- The upper side of the paper is not parallel to its opposite side, resulting in an irregularly shaped engraving.
- The engraving has a thin paper of regular quality.
- It is well inked and has a good stamping.
- The upper margin is thin and irregular, and the lower margin is thin. The side margins are wide.
- The engraving has suffered from humidity, so the paper has damp stains and rust spots, all of which are more pronounced as we get closer to the edges.
- The engraving is dirty, and the edges are much dirtier, with very small tears, and the tips are slightly deteriorated with slight bending.
- A light washing and bleaching would be a very good result.
Comments:
- Measurements are approximate.
