Description:
- Engraving corresponding to Plate 2 of Civilisation, belonging to the Popular Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Sciences and Arts, made by Federico Gillman, and formed according to the Iconographic Encyclopaedia and the Conversations Lexicon of Germany.
- The engraving depicts palustrine constructions or palafittes, which are dwellings built on wooden stakes, usually within a lake or river. Various elements of this type of construction are depicted, such as the arrangement of the stakes, objects from Lake Constance constructions, etc.
- In the upper margin is the title 'CIVILISATION', and in the upper right-hand corner is printed 'Lam. 2', which identifies it as engraving number 2 in a series on civilisations.
- In the lower margin are the identifications of the different objects of the marshy constructions, such as: the layout of the stakes, prehistoric marshy rooms, remains of the same, etc.
- Chalcographic etching on steel, although a different technique could also have been used.
- It is in single-colour black, very well inked, centred with acceptable margins and with a good stamping.
- The fact that the engraving has a distinctive mark or contrast is of great importance in order to be able to identify data such as the engraver, the artist, the place
