Description:
- Intaglio engraving of figures from the Old and New Testament.
- The following inscription appears in the central part of the engraving: ‘Biblical icons. Old and New Testament. Figures from the Old and New Testament. Made and engraved by Jan Juyken'.
- The authors: Johannes Luyken (1649-1712) was a Dutch poet, painter and engraver. And Johannes Covens (1697-1774) was a Dutch geographical publisher, known for his collaboration with the publisher Cornelis Mortier. They published under a joint name, Covens & Mortier.
- A beautiful large engraving from a book called ‘Printed Representations of the Stories of the Old and New Testament’.
- In the lower margin are the identifications of the different authors, such as the draftsman, the engraver and the publisher. In this case the engraver and the draftsman are the same author.
- Intaglio etching on steel, although another technique could also have been used.
- Produced in monochrome black tone, very good ink, centred with good margins and with a good stamping.
- The fact that the engraving has a distinctive mark or contrast is of great importance in order to be able to identify data such as the engraver, the artist, the place where it was printed and other details.
Conservation and Damage:
- Good general condition.
- The engraving has medium-thickness paper of good quality.
- The paper is somewhat dirty, but without major rust or damp stains.
- The engraving has tears and folds at the edges and tips. It is folded in half, as it belongs to a book.
- If a cleaning is applied to it, the result could be very acceptable.
Comments:
- Measurements are approximate.
- The tones of the colours in the photos are not the same as the tones of the real colours.
- The Engraving for sale is the one that corresponds to the photos. The description is not a detailed exposition of the same.
- The data provided here are personal opinions not contrasted.
