Description:
- Beautiful engraving by Louis Paul Pierre Dumont, based on one of the representations of 'The Bronze Serpent' by Gustave Doré, which belongs to the collection of Illustrations of the Holy Bible.
- 'And Moses made a serpent of brass, and set it upon a pole; and when a serpent had bitten any man, he looked upon the serpent of brass, and lived'. Passage mentioned in numbers 21:4-9.
- Engraving made on a wooden plate, woodcut, in black monochrome tones. Signed on the plate by Louis Paul Pierre Dumont, as engraver, and Gustave Doré as draughtsman. The title appears outside the plate.
- Gustave Doré (Paul Gustave Doré) of French origin and romantic inspiration, was a versatile artist: illustrator, engraver, draftsman, painter and sculptor. Internationally recognized by his contemporaries, his success as an illustrator was immense and his worldwide renown.
- Louis Paul Pierre Dumont (1822 - 1882) was a French painter, draftsman and engraver. He engraved on wood.
- The Holy Bible, published in 1866, was a large folio edition published in two volumes simultaneously. The Illustrations of the Holy Bible are a series of 241 engravings, designed by Gustave Doré.
Conservation and damage:
- General condition: Good.
- The Engraving has a white paper of medium thickness.
- It has very good margins and the image is centered.
- It is very well inked, and has a good printing.
- The edges are dirty, with small breaks and folds.
- The ends are slightly deteriorated with slight folds and creases.
- The engraving has not suffered external aggressions such as humidity, insect or rodent attacks, etc.
- If a light wash and bleaching is applied, the result would be very good.
Comments:
- Measures are approximate. It presents the own wear of its time.
- Ideal engraving as a collection piece and decorative element.
- Because it is inevitable the differences of tonalities between photos and reality, you must bear in mind that the tones of the colors of the photos are not exactly equal to the tones of the real colors.
