ENGRAVING LAKE OF THE FOUR CANTONS. SWITZERLAND.

Description:
- Engraving of the Four Cantons of central Switzerland.
- The lake has a total surface area of 114 km2. It is the setting for part of the legend about William Tell, who is said to have triggered the rebellion of the Swiss cantons against the Holy Roman Empire.
- All titles and signatures are outside the plate. The draughtsman is unknown.
- In the upper margin is the legend 'LAC DES QUATRE CANTONS - VIERWALDSTADTER SEE - LAKE OF THE FOUR CANTONS'.
- In the lower margin is the legend 'Tellen Platt - Tell's Kapelle - Tellen Platt'.
- In the upper right-hand corner is printed the number '10', which suggests that the engraving is number 10 in a series.
- In the lower centre, the Engraver signs only as Rouargue, so it is by one of the two Rouargue brothers. In our opinion, the author of the engraving plate is most probably Adolphe Rouargue (1810 - 1870).
- In the lower left-hand corner the director signs as Lemaitre Dir.
- Chalcographic etching on steel plate, although a different technique could also have been used.
- Produced in single-colour black tone, very well inked.
- It is probably an engraving belonging to a book.
Conservation and damage:
- General condition: Good.
- The upper side of the paper is not parallel to its opposite side, resulting in an irregularly shaped engraving.
- The engraving has a thin paper of regular quality.
- It is well inked and has a good stamping.
- The upper margin is thin and irregular, and the lower margin is thin. The side margins are wide.
- The engraving has suffered from humidity, so the paper has damp stains and rust spots, all of which are more pronounced as we get closer to the edges.
- The engraving is dirty, and the edges are much dirtier, with very small tears, and the tips are slightly deteriorated with slight bending.
- A light washing and bleaching would be a very good result.
