Description:
- Engraving from the Church of Truas, in Vivarés, France (12th century)
- This is the Church of Truas, in the municipality of Vivarés (Vivarais in French). We have not been able to find current information about the church, so it probably no longer exists or is in ruins.
- On the upper margin it has the legend 'France XII. S - France XII. 257.
- On the lower margin is the legend 'Church of Truas' 'Eglise de Truas'.
- In the lower right-hand corner, outside the image, is the signature 'Lemaitre Direxit', the engraver. In the lower left corner, outside the image, is the signature 'Gauchurel del', the artist. At the end of the lower left corner is the numbering '65. France'.
- Lion Gaucherel (1816-1886). Painter and engraver, born in Paris. He engraved for various archaeological publications, but went on to etch reproductions of ancient and contemporary paintings.
- Engraving probably done with an etching plate, although a different technique could have been used.
- Made in black monochrome. The inking of the plate is good, and both the quality and the definition of the lines are also good, so it responds to an early print run.
- It is probably an engraving belonging to a book, so it could have been bound.
Conservation and damage:
- General condition: Good.
- The margins are sufficient with whole edges and without tears, folds or bending. The Engraving has a paper of fine thickness and regular quality, glued by the corners to another paper.
- The paper is a little yellowish, with some rust marks
- If it is slightly washed and bleached, the result would be very good.
Comments:
- The measurements are approximate.
- Ideal as a collector's item and a decorative element.
- The fact that the engraving has a distinctive mark or contrast is very important in order to identify data such as the engraver, the artist, the place where it was printed and other details.
- Because it is inevitable that there will be differences in tones between photos and reality, you should bear in mind that the tones of the colours in the photos are not exactly the same as the tones of the real colours.
- The Engraving on sale is the one that corresponds to the photos, which in turn are complemented in this Description, with the aim of providing a better knowledge of the Object, and never being a detailed exhibition of it.
- The data provided here are not contrasted personal opinions.
