Description:
- Engraving corresponding to Plate 21 on Ethnography, part of the Popular Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Sciences and Arts, produced by Federico Gillman, and based on the Iconographic Encyclopaedia and the Conversations Lexicon from Germany.
- The engraving features people from various tribes, mostly from the African continent, such as: the Wanyamwezi (Nyamwezi), a Bantu people of East Africa, and the second largest ethnic group in Tanzania; indigenous peoples of the Congo and Mozambique; the Manganja, related to the Chewa; the Zulu; and many other subgroups that used to belong to ethnic groups of African descent descended from African slaves, brought from various regions of Africa.
- The upper margin bears the title “ETHNOGRAPHY”, and the top right-hand corner is printed with “Lam. 21”, identifying it as Engraving number 21 in a series on ethnography.
- The lower margin features descriptions of the various figures, tools, dances, yokes used to drive slaves, weaving techniques, etc.
- An etching on steel, although a different technique may also have been used.
- Executed in monochrome black, with excellent ink coverage, well-centred with acceptable margins and a good impression.
