Description:
- Etching of the bay of Alicante.
- Alexandre Jean Noel (1752-1843), a French-born artist, who mostly produced watercolour drawings. This is probably an engraving based on a painting by Noel.
- The engraving shows the bay of Alicante, with many people in period costume, in the foreground. On the left-hand side, a person can be seen climbing one of the palm trees. In the background, the castle of Santa Bárbara, part of the wall that surrounded the city, and a large part of the city. The beach and several boats and sailing ships can be seen.
- In the lower left-hand margin is the signature of ‘Noël’ the artist, along with the date.
- This is an intaglio or intaglio printing, a printing process in which the images are the result of stamping a metal plate or sheet through a press, in which incisions are made to contain the ink that will be fixed to the paper.
- It is quite large, unframed. On the back it has writing in French.
- It is very important that the engraving has a distinctive mark or contrast, in order to be able to identify data such as the engraver, the artist, the place where it was printed and other details.
Conservation and Damage:
- General condition Good.
- The engraving has medium-thickness paper of good quality.
- As can be seen in the photographs, it has a rather tanned colour, most probably due to the type of composition of the paper.
- It shows wear typical of it's age.
Comments:
- Measurements are approximate.
- Ideal engraving as a decorative element.
- The tones of the colours in the photos are not the same as the tones of the real colours.
- The Engraving for sale is the one that corresponds to the photos. The description is not a detailed exposition of it.
- The data provided here are personal opinions not contrasted.
