Description:
- Complete construction plumb bob from the first half of the 17th century, with a solid bronze weight, 8.9 cm high and 7.9 cm in diameter, cone-shaped with a ring at the top, a threaded head, and the original wooden nut. A reclaimed cord has been added. Its total weight is 1,675 grams.
- The weight head incorporates the upper ring, featuring a large-pitch thread with deep grooves, resulting in a very strong and precise thread.
- The wooden nut is perforated transversely. Its width is 7.9 cm, matching the diameter of the weight, and its diameter is 6.5 cm, allowing for easy winding of the cord.
- The plumb bob is of very good workmanship, both in the casting and turning of the yellow bronze weight and in the turning of the wooden nut, all with simple yet excellent finishes.
- The plumb bob was probably made in southern Europe.
No mark, brand, or hallmark has been found on either the weight or the nut that could provide information about its place of manufacture, the manufacturer, or its characteristics.
- Due to the properties of the bronze and wood, a very attractive patina has been preserved.
Conservation and Damage:
- This plumb bob has been well cared for, so both the weight and the nut are in very good condition, although both have many dents and scratches on the edges and faces, consistent with extensive use.
- The nut has some wood loss along its edges.
