- The artist, Eugène Boudin (1824-1898), was one of the first French landscape painters to paint outdoors. Most of his work consists of seascapes. He was deeply influenced by the 17th-century Dutch masters. He became friends with Monet and joined him and other friends for the first Impressionist exhibition.
- This print is one of the most celebrated oil paintings by the French Impressionist artist, created in 1895 during his last trip to Italy. It portrays the iconic basilica from a distance.
