Description:
Beautiful engraving, probably in etching steel (it can be a plate of another material and another technique). The inking of the plate is very good, and both the quality and the definition of the lines is also very good, so it responds to one of the first runs.
In the lower right corner, outside the image, is the signature 'Rouargue sc'. There were two Rouargue brothers, and both were recorders. The most significant as painter and engraver was Adolphe Rouargue (1810-187?), Of which he was most likely the author of this print, although his brother Émile Rouargue (1795-1865) was also an engraver.
Wilkirchlein is a set of three caves located in the Canton of Appenzell in Switzerland. These caves were inhabited initially by primitive men, and by hermits for more than two hundred years. In this place was built the small hermitage that appears in the engraving, which is currently a small museum. Fine paper of regular quality. The margins are good.
In the upper right corner, outside the image, the number 28 appears. In addition, a strip of paper is stuck along the left edge. Probably it would belong to a series of a book, so it would be bound. The edges are slightly deteriorated, with slight folds, bent and small broken. The paper is yellowish, has dirt and rust marks, especially when approaching the edges. The measurements are approximate. With proper cleaning and bleaching, a good result could be obtained. Very interesting as a documentary image, besides being a collection piece and decorative element.
Comments: Due to the fact that the differences in tonalities between photos and reality are inevitable, we must bear in mind that the color tones of the photos are not exactly the same as the tones of the actual colors. The engraving presents the wear characteristic of its time, as well as some stains. It has small flaws. The information provided here are personal opinions not contrasted.
